Schadenfreude Saturdays

Who doesn’t love a good dose of schadenfreude? “Schadenfreude” happens to be my second favorite word in the English language.  So, drum roll, please, for your weekly dose of schadenfreude.

Well here you have it, folks, a “mom” (read: egg donor and incubator) who microwaved her one month old baby and received life in prison for it. She could have received the death penalty and for a number of reasons, I’m glad she didn’t. First, I don’t believe in the death penalty (see my post about Osama Bin Laden). Second, a death sentence is often over-turned and at the expense of more legal tom foolery that those of us who don’t microwave babies end up footing the bill for.  Third, it would substantially reduce the amount of time she has to reflect on her heinous actions.

While I do wonder if some people are born so cold that they can feel no remorse over such an action, I am (mostly) convinced that as a person gets older, they would most certainly spend a lot of time reflecting on and developing intense self-hate over committing such a heinous act.  I’m not sure what prison will do for this hellbeast, I’m not sure that a person who could do such a thing can be rehabilitated. She not only intentionally placed her 28- day old baby in the microwave, she watched her cook for two full minutes! I do know that our prisons do not in any way rehabilitate or attempt to rehabilitate our prisoners. Because of that, in cases of hellbeasts like this, it’s best they stay in prison for life, even if it means we foot the bill for the stay at the local 1-star Hilton.
