Dr. Seuss’ Words of Wisdom for POTUS Election, 2012
Here we are, 409 days until the next presidential election, and we’re already on presidential debate # 7, on YouTube, nonetheless. If we thought the lead up to the 2008 election was interminable, it seems we’re about to re-define that term leading up to this presidential election (FYI: the election will be on Tuesday, November 6, 2012).
As I was (re-)reading a Dr. Seuss story to my girls last night, the extreme importance of the genius behind what Theodor Geisel has teaching children of all ages for decades, pressed hard on my mind. We’ve too often come to feel the idea that ‘every vote counts’ is perhaps, too cliche to be true, but it’s not.
In Horton Hears A Who (1954), the town of Whoville is about to be demolished, all of its people crushed, and all because only one small voice isn’t joining in to shout in the town’s darkest hour:
“This,” cried the Mayor, “is your town’s darkest hour!
The time for all Whos who have blood that is red
To come to the aid of their country!” he said.
“We’ve GOT to make noises in greater amounts!
So, open your mouth lad! For every voice counts!”
Thus he spoke as he climbed. When they got to the top,
The lad cleared his throat and he shouted out, “YOPP!”
And that Yopp…
That one small, extra Yopp put it over!
Finally, at last! From that speck on that clover
Their voices were heard! They rang out clear and clean.
And the elephant smiled. “Do you see what I mean?…
They’ve proven they ARE persons, no matter how small,
And their whole world was saved by the Smallest of All!”
